What reviews actually criticized
Purchase decisions deserve both sides. The praise is consistent: Eurogamer calls the swordplay 'superbly flowing' with wonderfully cinematic kung fu combat, and several reviewers single out the boss battles as exceptional. The criticisms, also consistent: balance and quality issues at launch — uneven difficulty spikes and technical rough edges. None of the launch-week coverage we checked called the combat anything less than excellent; the caveats are around polish, not design.
Practical read: if you want PBZ at its best, it's safe to wait a patch or two; if you're buying for the combat alone, the combat is delivering.
Set your expectations: it's not a soulslike
The most common pre-purchase misconception: PBZ is a punishing soulslike. It isn't — combat is parry-centric and combo-driven (closer to Stellar Blade's pace), difficulty is loadout-shaped more than reflex-shaped, and the systems are explained badly enough that you'll want a combat guide for the first ten hours. That's a feature for guide sites, and honest for you.
Pre-purchase checklist
- 145 GB free? (install size, not a typo)
- GPU at GTX 1660 or better? minimum is upscaling-dependent
- Want the story clean? avoid launch-week YouTube fronts — the reveal coverage is heavy
- Read a review from the last patch cycle — launch balance criticisms may already be stale
